New York City developers learned a hard lesson in November 2010 when a group of anti-development residents mobilized over Facebook and Twitter to halt a $100-million housing development.
These social platforms were blamed for bringing the masses together against the project, and the developers and planners behind the project were blamed for not knowing how to properly utilize these sites.
The incident was chronicled in the Bryan Ellis Real Estate Letter, which noted that it was also addressed during a Nassau Country Planning Commission Public Hearing and at a real estate conference held at Hofstra University to discuss how agents should be using social media.
Experts who spoke at these events recognized how important social media is to not only combating anti-development groups, but to promoting a project’s benefits and vacancies.
