Taming Document Sharing on the iPad for Real Estate with Evernote

By , About.com Guide

If you read enough reviews and first impressions of the iPad and the Pages word processing app, you'll come away wondering if it's worth it or not. It definitely is...once you figure out how to get documents saved in MS Word or PDF format to places and clients where they're needed. I tried:

  • GoDocs
  • DocsToGo
  • Office Pro
  • Air Sharing

What I want is I think what many users who write a lot and create Word Documents want. I want to be able to save what I create in the Pages app as a Word doc, which you can, and a PDF as well. As pages is such an awesome word processor, using other apps like Office Pro to create Word docs just seemed like settling for second best. So, once I made up my mind to use Pages, it was now a question of how to share the docs via email with others, as well as be able to pick them up and edit them from any computer.

As it turned out, the answer was a solution I'd been using all along, Evernote. I've written about Evernote before, as it is an amazing tool for capturing notes from just about anywhere. You can send notes to Evernote via email, Twitter and buttons that work in Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. What I realized was that emailing the MS Word or PDF document from Pages to my private Evernote email address would get it up there where I could get to it from any other computer with Word in order to edit it.

I can then delete the document from Pages and the iPad to save space and clutter. If I need it again, I can email it to myself and open it in Pages. The great search functions of Evernote mean that when I email it up, I just add a quick note with keywords or tags so that I can find it easily in seconds, even though I have hundreds of notes up on Evernote. Logging in to Evernote from any computer will get me to the document for editing or other actions.

So, if you get frustrated with trying to manage documents with other apps, and you want to use the great functionality of Pages, Evernote can solve a lot of issues for you.
