YouMail for a More Personal Cell Voicemail Experience

About.com Rating 4.5

By James Kimmons, About.com

The Bottom Line
The bottom line is that I switched from Callwave to YouMail for the ability to personalize answering messages. I miss the text conversion feature of Callwave, but we're hoping YouMail will follow soon.

There are a number of reasons to have a different greeting announcement for different people. It's really a super function, and I've had some impressed clients who appreciated their own personal greeting message when I couldn't take their call.

Pros
  • Have a custom answering message for all your frequent callers.
  • Get your voicemail notification via cell text message and email.
  • Downloadable .mp3 files of the voicemails for archiving.
Cons
  • Wish they would get a voice to text conversion feature.
Description
  • YouMail takes over your cell provider's voicemail function.
  • Custom greetings can be created for individuals or groups.
  • An email is delivered with a link to play the voicemail.
  • A text message is delivered to announce receipt of a message, with the caller's ID.
  • You can download and save the .mp3 recorded message if desired.
Guide Review - YouMail for a More Personal Cell Voicemail Experience
YouMail provides a voicemail service for your cell phone to replace your cell provider's rather limited functionality as an answering device. The main reason for doing something different is the ability to get your voicemails delivered in other ways than just an icon and a beep on your phone.

When you sign up for the free YouMail service, you receive simple online instructions on how to program your phone. Once complete, YouMail takes over your messaging from your cell phone provider. You can have a different greeting for any caller. It knows which one to play by checking the caller ID against your contact list and the message assigned to that contact.

My clients have let me know that they appreciate a special greeting when I can't take their call. A recent very important repeat client heard this message I created just for him: "Oliver, you know how important your call is to me. It's obvious that I'm being held hostage or I'd take your call. However, I'm close to breaking free and I'll call you as soon as I do."

The client appreciated the humor, but it also reinforced how important I considered his call, rather than the boring and generic "Your call is important to me." You can also create on your cell a special greeting on the fly when someone has called and left a message. Record your own, or choose from hundreds of their messages, some quite funny.
