How to Get a License in Another State Using Reciprocity

Finding the states that will give you reciprocal licensing consideration.

Under the right circumstances, you might be able to get licensed in another state with reduced requirements. Reciprocal licensing arrangements exist between states that allow an agent or broker to get a license based on their current license in another state.

Don't assume that this means you can be licensed in multiple states, as some of them require residence. Even if they don't, it's doubtful you'll find a broker to sponsor your license if you're not going to be there and productive. License reciprocity is useful for relocating agents and brokers in getting started in a new state.

It is possible to be licensed in some states without residency, Colorado being one. However, the requirements for continuing education don't overlap completely, creating more expense and time to maintain multiple licenses. For brokers and agents near state borders, it may be necessary to hold two licenses in order to work a reasonably sized territory.
