If Your Real Estate Blog Looks Like a Standard Website, Don't Call It A Blog

This is more opinion than fact, but I think I'm right on this one.

As the title says, this is a lot of opinion, but there's some real experience to back it up. There are still a lot of people out there who go to "websites" to find information and shop for real estate. They aren't looking for opinion, at least not on the first visit. The question is, what is their attitude about blogs?

Some are still of the opinion that blogs are some sort of social commentary, or the personal ramblings of someone who wants the world to read them. We know this isn't true, but that doesn't mean that they know the same. This brings us to the question of whether they would avoid visiting a blog site if they see that pesky "blog" word.

Some would, I'm sorry to say. They aren't into the fact that we are real estate blogging because it's better for SEO, gets more original and frequently updated content onto our sites, and generally is just a better way to present our expertise on the Internet. All they know is that they want to locate real estate information and homes on the Web.

So, if you've spent a great deal of time selecting a WordPress theme that doesn't just list a bunch of posts in a row on the home page, then it might serve you well to not call your site a blog...at least not until people are more accustomed to blogs. I use a magazine style theme, with lots of graphics. It doesn't look like a blog, and I don't really need to call it one.

I'm not afraid for someone to know that it's a blog, but I also don't put the word blog in the title, nor in the domain name. If I thought it would help with SEO, I would in a heartbeat. But, I think that the SEO value in the blog platform is there no matter what the public thinks the site is built on. It's not a big deal, but you might want to consider just building your web presence without a label.
