Before You Jump Into a Real Estate Blog, Know the Commitments.

By James Kimmons, About.com

Blogging for real estate is a really hot topic right now. Blogs are growing at an extremely rapid rate. Of course, this means that if you're planning on a real estate blog, you'll need to know what it will take to stand out from the crowd, garner subscribing readers and impress the search engines.

If You Build It......No, They Don't Have to Come

Just because you start a blog about YourTown Real Estate, it doesn't mean that there will be anyone interested enough to read it or subscribe. Start with the knowledge that you must earn readership and the loyalty of a subscriber base.

A Loyal and Regular Reader Base is not Built on Real Estate Content Alone.

Many will tell you not to even feature your listings on your main blog. You can place links to them along the side panels, but there are other quite important marketing functions for your real estate blog.

You are positioning yourself as an expert in your market by writing about not only real estate specific topics, but also area events, sights, government and business. Elicit the support of others who have areas of expertise and like to talk and write about them. Have all types of area subject matter on your blog.

Write for Your Readers, Not the Search Engines

There is advice out there about how to work keyword phrases into your blog post text in ways that will please the search engines. You should keep top of mind that, if you're writing a real estate specific post, using "YourTown real estate" as a phrase in the post is good, but doing it a half dozen times is not. Over time, the success of your blog will be due to great and regular content that causes readers to return and link to you.

Post, Post and Post.

One post a week is good. Two posts a week is great, but three or more is wonderful. Keeping in mind that quality is always better than quantity, try to post frequently. Wherever you are in town, or whatever event you're attending, you're probably looking at a blog post. After all, those wishing to move to your community are wanting to know all about it. Tell them about the great meal you had at the local Italian restaurant. You'll also get points with the restaurant owner. If you and others are interested enough to be there, there are readers that will want to know about it.

Read the Blogs of Others and Post Comments When You Have Input

Blogging is community. There are real estate bloggers all around the country doing what you're doing. Take the time to subscribe to some of the larger ones and you'll pick up pointers for your own. Start posting comments on their posts and you'll bring traffic back to yours. Reading their posts is also a time commitment. There is no shortcut to a great blog.
