Gimmicks to Sell Houses - Are They Working?

Tuesday January 15, 2008
With the California real estate markets still in the major doldrums, some sellers and their agents are resorting to gimmicks to bring more attention to their homes. Mentioned in this article:

  • A brand new Honda Civic for free.
  • Seller carry-back financing.
  • Seller to pay $20,000 in closing costs for buyer.
  • And, of course, bonuses to buyer agents.
And there's even an opposing viewpoint from an agent who says "I don't think it really makes a whole lot of difference" to getting a property sold, she said. "When it comes right down to it, I believe buyers are really looking at price and condition..." Then there's the comment that could be a little bit of "sour grapes" from a broker leaving the business.

Don’t feel like signing in to read the Mercury News article.

I do think that overall gimmicks don’t work maybe more than once in a blue moon. Price and condition are the keys and will likely remain so.

Athol:

Thanks for the comment. I never link to sign-in articles, and this one didn’t start out that way. Not a user-friendly way to lure opt-ins. I won’t take it down, but I’ll remember them.

I’ve had the same problem with Inman News items that don’t stay public.

Thanks
Jim
