Case-Shiller Index Still Dropping

Friday November 30, 2007
If you're a fan of the Case-Shiller Index®, the recent numbers are not pretty. For graphic representation, I like this report from seekingalpha.com. Notice that the high-flyers from the real estate boom are the biggest losers in the downturn. This is usually the case, and similar to how high flying stocks act in a downturn. It's a risk to invest in any market that is appreciating rapidly. The homeowners in Florida are experiencing this right now.

Note that the center area of the graph has some steady increases that are still in up trends, though suffering a bit. Seattle and Portland are examples. The rises weren't as dramatic, and that appears to be holding true for the decreases as well. Going back to a new tool, with value not yet determined, neither area looks great for interest when we look at Google Trends for the search terms "seattle real estate" and "miami real estate."
